Goals of the Guidelines

MENUMENU

Several overall goals were established as the framework for the guidelines. The standards and recommendations herein were vetted through the lenses of these goals and objectives. In general the overarching focus is on creating high quality greenways that meet the needs of users while being sustainable and maintainable.

GOAL

OBJECTIVES

IMPROVE LONG-TERM SUSTAINABILITY

  • Build upon an understanding of site challenges and avoid problem areas.
  • Avoid materials requiring frequent repair or replacement.
  • Promote the “green” in greenway by designing environmental services (shade, habitat, green infrastructure, etc.) into each project.
  • Outline steps for communication and quality control before and during construction.
  • Offer recommendations to utilize Best Management Practices for all elements of planning and design.Greater efficiencies in the design and construction processes.

REDUCE MAINTENANCE NEEDS

  • Understand the design impact by eliminating maintenance challenges through coordination and design.
  • Be strategic about the use of elements that are non-standard.
  • Promote the use of materials that are long-wearing.
  • Standardize elements for ease of replacement/ repair.
  • Develop landscapes that require less maintenance input.
  • Identify key milestones with municipal partners for buy-in and understanding of maintenance capabilities.

IMPROVE FACILITY QUALITY

  • Make greenway implementation more consistent, regardless of designer and builder.
  • Create a toolkit for evaluating and reviewing greenway designs.
  • Develop facilities following recognized current industry safety design standards.
  •  Set baseline standards for materials use.
  • Develop maintainable facilities.

ENHANCE THE OVERALL EXPERIENCE OF GREENWAY USERS

  • Consistent implementation of greenways throughout the region.
  • Create recognizable GRG facilities for easy wayfinding.
  • Develop facilities that are safe, comfortable and inviting.
  • Set a baseline for trail amenities.
