STANDARD CROSS SECTION – TRAIL ADJACENT TO RAILWAY

Rail corridors can be ideal locations for a trail alignment. However, trail placement in these areas must take into account the operating restrictions of the adjacent railway.

Any improvements within 50’-0” of rail right of way should be coordinated with the operating railroad company.

• A typical 25’-0” setback from the centerline of the active rail line must be maintained to account for operating envelope of train. However, railroad right-of-way will vary. Its location should be confirmed and avoided if possible. Plans should be shared with railroad early in design process to confirm right-of-way and any other constraints.
• 2% max trail cross slope.
• Maintain typical 3’-0” shoulder.
• Fencing is not required where trail is further than 50’-0” from centerline of active rail line, unless operating railroad requires it.
• Fencing shall be placed outside of 3’-0” trail shoulder.
• Provide drainage away from railway swales.
• Strip existing topsoil for reuse in finished grading.
• Consider incorporating light-blocking materials into fence layout where train headlights may face the trail and inhibit user visibility.
