As greenway trails are developed increasingly in more dense neighborhoods, available right-of-way becomes more limited.
Often the greenway trail will need to occupy the space where a typical sidewalk would be. Mixing adjacent residents and the throughway of the trail requires clearly defined spaces for these different needs.
- An asphalt trail is preferred to concrete in this configuration as it distinguishes the trail from the adjacent resident sidewalks (typically concrete). A similar effect could be created utilizing painted striping or specialty concrete, however each have their own specific maintenance challenges.
- On higher volume trails, striping and signage should also be included to better indicate the throughway of the trail.
- Narrow right-of-way may require modification to roadway width to incorporate trail.
