In areas where the trail is close to a roadway, or where there is limited right of way space for stormwater management, trailside bioretention cells can be incorporated.
Curb cuts take in stormwater from the trail and the adjacent roadway, while planting and biorentention soils infiltrate and clean stormwater. See bioretention for more detail.
- For the safety of trail users a curb should separate the trail from the bioretention basin.
- Where the bioretention cell is located alongside on-street parking, the streetside curb should be widened to 1-6” minimum to serve as a carriage strip for passengers. Where possible a wider paved area should be provided.
- Bioretention cells should be broken at regular intervals to allow cross access and access to parking as needed.
- Landscape area in bioretention should be large enough to promote plant health, see plan below.
Curb cuts on the pedestrian side and on the roadway side of this bioretention cell allow runoff to be properly managed in situations where there is limited space for stormwater management
