Project Overview
This project is studying the feasibility of a walking and biking bridge over the Meramec River linking Unger County Park and Greentree Park, which could create a vital connection between two sections of Meramec Greenway on either side of the river, from Valley Park/Simpson County Park/Greentree Park to Unger County Park/Fenton City Park/George Winter County Park.
A feasibility study is a comprehensive assessment of whether a bridge is practical and has the potential for success (based on technical, physical, financial, and environmental measures). The study investigates components like location, flooding impacts, tree removal impacts, connectivity, surrounding land use impacts, park and greenway usage, aesthetics, and more.
This feasibility study is building off of an initial flood study conducted between 2023 and 2024 during the Unger Park Trail realignment project. This was to determine if construction of a bridge over the Meramec River from Unger County Park to Greentree Park could meet a “No-Rise” requirement along this regulated floodway. A “No-Rise” certification confirms that a proposed project within a Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) floodway will not increase the Base Flood Elevation (BFE) or the 100-year water surface elevation. The draft study from 2023/24 has determined that a bridge could be constructed and meet the “No-Rise” requirement.
The current feasibility study also ensures community input continues to be a priority (as it is in all greenway projects!), with public work sessions and open houses for community members and greenway users to attend, as well as meetings with city leaders. The feasibility study will culminate in a report with final recommendations from the project team on if and how this project could move forward. GRG and our project partners will assess this report and determine any next steps at that time.
Project Location
This project is exploring the potential for a pedestrian bridge connection over the Meramec River between the existing Meramec Greenway in Unger Park in Fenton and Greentree Park in Kirkwood.

Community Feedback: Shaping the Greenway
We hosted an open house in Fenton on May 26, 2026 to share information about the feasbility study and gather feedback from the public. If you missed the open house, you can watch the presentation, view the display boards, or review the presentation powerpoint document below. A public survey was open between May 26 and June 19; the results of this survey are being analyzed and will be shared here.
