Dardenne Greenway: Mexico Road to Salt Lick Road

Project Overview

Great Rivers Greenway is partnering with the City of St. Peters and community members to plan, design and build an extension of the Dardenne Greenway. The project will improve the existing trail that extends from Mexico Road to the Dardenne Park parking lot on Dew Court. A new trail segment will extend from its current endpoint at Dew Court to Salt Lick Road. This greenway extension was identified through the St. Charles County Greenway Master Plan as a high priority project by county residents and project stakeholders. Future phases of the project will extend the greenway to Brown Road Park, Sports Center Park, Old Town St. Peters, and the existing trails within 370 Lakeside Park.

Project Location

This project will extend the Dardenne Greenway nearly two miles north from its current endpoint at Mexico Rd. The greenway will continue to the St. Peters Golf Club & Water’s Edge Banquet Center entrance at Salt Lick Road. The existing paved trail between Mexico Rd and Dardenne Park will be improved as part of the greenway expansion project.

Current Status

In February 2024, this project was awarded $1.5 million in federal funding to improve the connection between Mexico Road and Dardenne Park!

The next steps will be working towards developing the final construction documents for the segment between Mexico Road and Dardenne Park by the end of 2024 with a goal for construction of this section in 2025. Final Construction documents for Dardenne Greenway between Dardenne Park and Salt Lick Road are expected to be completed in 2025 for construction in 2026.

The new greenway improvements will:

• Improve lighting and visibility on the underside of the Mexico Road bridge
• Improve and smooth out existing trail connection at Mexico Rd (Eliminate hairpin turn and blind spots)
• Better manage stormwater to reduce flooding on the trail
• Be ADA Accessible
• Improve greenway visitor experience
