Deer Creek Greenway at Brentwood Park Opening Celebration June 2023

Posted on Wednesday July 17, 2024

We joined the City of Brentwood on June 2 & 3, 2023  to cut the ribbon and celebrate the new Deer Creek Greenway extension in Brentwood and the recently completed Brentwood Park. There were food trucks, games, a bubble bus, art & the chance to explore the new greenway & park.

This project was completed as part of the larger Brentwood Bound Project. The goal of Brentwood Bound was to mitigate the repeated flooding events of Deer Creek and also improve Manchester Road in Brentwood. Read all about the new Brentwood Park here. The new destination playground will be opening in 2024!

Lorraine Davis Park: Deer Creek Greenway

Posted on Monday July 15, 2024

Located along the Deer Creek Greenway, this park honors Lorraine Davis, a North Webster resident, educator, volunteer and community leader.

About Lorraine Davis

Lorraine Davis Park is named for Lorraine Davis, a North Webster resident who taught English and Latin classes at Douglass High School. Black students from throughout all of St. Louis County attended Douglass High School in North Webster—the first and only accredited high school for Black students in St. Louis County—until 1954 when schools were desegregated.

She was a member of the O.D.T. “Our Day Together” Club which was organized in Webster Groves in the 1930s.  As part of the O.D.T. club, Davis worked to provide scholarships and encourage neighborhood beautification and other civic projects. She was also elected to the city’s new Board of Freeholders in 1953.

Lorraine Davis Park is located in North Webster at 137 E Waymire Ave, Webster Groves, 63119 (off South Brentwood Blvd.) on the Deer Creek Greenway.  North Webster was founded as a community for newly freed enslaved people in 1866, but its roots go back farther.

The first African Americans in what is now North Webster were those enslaved by John Marshall, who came from Virginia in 1832. The linear park and greenway follow the rerouted Shady Creek, once an important source of water, fish and recreation for neighbors in North Webster.

North Webster Walking Tour

The North Webster Neighborhood Coalition, Webster Groves Historical Society and the City of Webster Groves created a self-guided historic walking tour of North Webster.  A portion of the tour will take you to sites around Lorraine Davis Park. The tour is free. You can find a map, guidebook and overview “A Black Community of Faith and Hope: North Webster” here.

Brickline and Deer Creek Greenways awarded a total of $7 million in Federal Construction Funds!

Posted on Monday July 15, 2024

Two greenway projects were recently awarded a total of $7 million through the regional planning agency, East-West Gateway Council of Governments.

$4 Million for Brickline Greenway: Page Avenue to Washington Avenue in the City of St. Louis

This $4 million grant will be used to support a half mile section of the greenway on Spring Avenue between Page Blvd and Washington Avenue. This will extend the reach of the Brickline Greenway from Fairground Park to Page Blvd that was awarded $15 million in Federal RAISE Grant (Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity) funding earlier this year. Construction is slated for 2026. Read more about the Brickline Greenway here.

$3 Million for Deer Creek Greenway: Maplewood to River des Peres Greenway in the City of St. Louis

This $3 million grant will be used for a 1 mile extension of the Deer Creek Greenway from its current endpoint at Big Bend Blvd. to the River Des Peres Greenway at Francis R. Slay Park (intersection of Canterbury and Ellendale Ave in the City of St. Louis). When complete, it will create a greenway connection between the cities of Webster Groves, Maplewood, and St. Louis with connections* to Deer Creek Shopping Center, the Maplewood business district, surrounding neighborhoods, multiple parks, and the Shrewsbury Lansdowne MetroLink station. (And Gravois Greenway too!) Construction is slated for summer 2025. Read more about the project here.
