Hodiamont Tracks Maintenance October 2026

Posted on Monday October 5, 2026

Maintenance is happening along the Hodiamont Tracks (site of the future Hodiamont Greenway) between Monday, October 5 and Friday, October 23. We want to make sure you have all the information you need as we take care of overgrowth and survey potholes along the Hodiamont Tracks to keep it clear, safe, and manageable for future improvements, and have provided contact information below in case you have any questions!

What work is happening? Why is this necessary?

Invasive vegetation management and pothole surveying will be happening along the site of the future Hodiamont Greenway to create a safer, more manageable corridor that will support future greenway development and long-term ecological improvements. This work will not require any street closures.

Recently, the St. Louis City Forestry Division cleared overgrown plants from Belt Avenue to Gwen Giles Park. Now, Great Rivers Greenway (GRG) is continuing this work from Belt Avenue to the St. Vincent Greenway by treating invasive species. Over time, this area has become impacted by aggressive, invasive plants like bush honeysuckle, poison ivy, grapevine, and wintercreeper. These species spread quickly and can overwhelm native vegetation that’s important for healthy habitats and create maintenance challenges in residents’ yards. We’ve heard from many of you about your concerns with this overgrowth, and managing this vegetation now will make future construction easier.

At the same time, a team onsite will be investigating pavement conditions and surveying potholes between Belt Avenue and Goodfellow Boulevard.

What vegetation management method is being used?

After careful consideration, targeted herbicide treatment has been determined to be the most effective way to control these invasive plants and prevent them from quickly returning. Physical removal alone often results in regrowth, requiring repeated disturbance and more work. We use this tool thoughtfully, responsibly, and only when necessary.

The product being used is Crossroad®, an herbicide that will be applied only by trained, licensed professionals who follow all label requirements and safety protocols. Areas being treated should not be entered until the application has dried, typically within about two hours, depending on weather conditions. Protecting our neighbors, their pets, and the environment is a priority, so we want to make sure you have all the information you need and are here to answer any questions you may have.

Why is there a range of dates instead of a specific date the work will happen?

The spray used to treat the invasive species must be applied under specific conditions (low wind, within a temperature range, when there is no rain in the forecast, etc.), so we need conditions to be just right for this to be effective. We have planned this plant project to happen at the same time as the pothole project so there is minimal disruption!

Questions?

Please feel free to reach out to info@grgstl.org or call 314-436-7009 and we’re happy to help answer any questions. Along the tracks, you may see yard signs with information about this project, and you can find the most up-to-date information on the project pages (greatriversgreenway.org/hodiamont-belt and greatriversgreenway.org/hodiamont-ggp). We appreciate your understanding and partnership as we work to improve this area for the community!
