FLOODGATE STATUS
The Mississippi Greenway remains open, but the floodgate just south of Carr Street is closed. The greenway is accessible from both sides of the gate, but visitors will need to find their own route to navigate around the shut floodgate.
From an accumulation of snowmelt in Spring and seasonal rainfall, both the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers are prone to flooding.
As of June 27th, 2024, a dam failure from Minnesota could result in more water traveling downstream toward St. Louis; however, National Weather Service expert, Mark Fuchs, only expects the possibility of minor to moderate occasional flooding (KSDK News, 2024).
The Mississippi Greenway will remain open and accessible to the public. Please use the provided maps and resources to plan your visit with the floodgate closure in mind.
Until future notice, please expect the City of St. Louis to keep the floodgate south of Carr Street and N Leonor K Sullivan Blvd. closed in precaution of future flooding.
The National Water Prediction Service, provided by NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration), can be used to monitor the Mississippi flood status.
