Mary Meachum Freedom Crossing
In conjunction with the “Mary Meachum Memorial Water Service,” led by Angela da Silva on Friday evening May 8, this creative workshop on Saturday May 9 invites participants to learn more about African spiritual traditions related to water, while exploring their own memories and cultural traditions. For 19th-century Freedom Seekers, whose history is commemorated at the Mary Meachum Freedom Crossing, rivers such as the Mississippi and the Ohio represented both dangerous border and horizon of freedom. Along their freedom journeys, people drew on a rich heritage of spiritual and practical wisdom connected to water. How do we still see this expressed today? How can we deepen, with intention, our own relationship to water and the ways it speaks to us? Together we will join in guided discussion, discovery, and reflection to develop insights to nourish our creative practice.
Note: Participation is limited to 20 people. The workshop is designed for adults at all levels of experience, working in any creative form (written, visual, performance, etc.). Participants in the Saturday workshop are required to attend the Friday evening presentation. The workshop is free, however, advance registration is required.
