Dardenne Greenway: Twin Island Trailhead Ribbon Cutting

Alongside our partners City of O’Fallon and Missouri Department of Transportation, we cut the ribbon to the brand new Dardenne Greenway Twin Island Trailhead!

This small-but-mighty project is a great example of how we build a great network or greenways, with great partners, one piece at a time. With Missouri Department of Transportation rebuilding a bridge along Technology Drive Outer Road, the City of O’Fallon and Great Rivers Greenway partnered leverage the opportunity to build part of the greenway and a trailhead, laying the groundwork for future Dardenne Greenway extensions.

This new trailhead and small greenway connection opens up access to the western end of the Dardenne Greenway at BaratHaven with new parking and other amenities like native plants and a bike fix station (stand and tools for basic bike repairs and maintenance.) There’s also a separate, walking and biking path on Technology Drive that spans Dardenne Creek. Equally exciting is the new paved, accessible greenway beneath I-64, overcoming the barrier of the Interstate highway and setting the stage for future greenway expansion to the west. It’s another step in the steady progress towards the long-term, overall vision for this greenway in St. Charles County from Broemmelsiek Park to the Mississippi River!

Of the names submitted by community members, the City of O’Fallon chose Twin Island as the name for the new trailhead to commemorate the Twin Island Campground that previously existed where The Chateaux at BaratHaven neighborhood now sits (just south-east of the trailhead). Locals remember camping, fishing, and enjoying the beautiful scenery at Twin Island Campground from the 1950s to the early 2000s.
