Temporary Delays for Greenway Visitors While Work is underway

Crews will be removing invasive honeysuckle along Gravois Greenway between Big Bend Blvd. and Watson Road in Crestwood the week of March 2, 2026. (weather permitting!)

This work will be divided into three sections:

  • Section 1 between Big Bend and Sappington Rd.,
  • Section 2 between Sappington Rd. and the greenway trailhead and access by the City of Crestwood Public Works Facility in Watson Industrial Court,
  • Section 3 between Crestwood Public Works Facility to Watson Rd.

Crew members will be stationed on both sides of the active work area. Greenway users will need to stop and wait until the crew member indicates it is okay to proceed through the work area.  For everyone’s safety, we ask greenway visitors to follow crew members’ instructions.  We will update here and on social media if this schedule changes due to weather.

Why is this work necessary? Great Rivers Greenway and City of Crestwood are working together to remove invasive bush honeysuckle, one of the most destructive invasive species in the St. Louis region. We need to remove it before it encroaches on the paved greenway and further damages the surrounding ecosystem. Here is why we want to remove the invasive bush honeysuckle:

  • It steals the sunlight, water, and nutrients in the soil, which:
  • Chokes out native plants that provide critical habitat & food for wildlife such as butterflies & birds
  • Chokes surrounding mature trees and bushes, causing long-term damage to our natural areas

We appreciate your patience as we work to improve the habitat along the greenway!
