Assessing Tree Decay – Biology, Biomechanics and Risk Workshops

With Dr. Chris Luley and Frank Rinn

Sorry, this workshop is full. If you would like to join the waitlist please submit your request to mcfcchairs@gmail.com. If openings become available, individuals on the waitlist will be given the opportunity to sign up on a first come, first serve basis.

We’re all alarmed when we see signs of decay on trees – but just how alarmed should we be?

With only outward signs such as fruiting bodies, wounds and cavities to go on, we’re often left guessing at just how compromised the tree is.

Frank Rinn and Dr. Chris Luley will show us what’s really going on inside decaying trees. Using the most advanced technology (the Arbortom sonic tomography system, Resistograph resistance drill, DNA testing) and the most basic (a mallet, our eyes and our ears), these experts will demonstrate the best methods available for decay assessment.

Dr. Luley will discuss fungal identification, biology and life cycles. He will explain how different decay organisms interact with their tree hosts and what we can do to manage them. Frank Rinn will discuss tree biology and biomechanics, and how breaking forces act on trees in various states of decay. Together these experts will explain how we can use this information to manage trees with decay more effectively.

We are offering two, identical two-day workshops and a one day advanced session. The workshops will be split between classroom sessions and in-field tree assessments performed by Dr. Luley and Frank Rinn.  Attendance is limited to 75 participants for sessions one and two. Both sessions are identical in content; you should select whichever dates fit your schedule best. Sessions cannot be mixed and matched. We are also offering a one-day advanced training session on Friday October 28. This session will cover the same material in the main workshops but in greater depth, with the smaller group size making for a more interactive learning experience. Recommended for advanced experts only, this session will be science-heavy.

Presenters:

Dr. Chris Luley
Dr. Chris Luley has a 35+ year career in urban forestry and arboriculture.  He is the former State Forest Pathologist for the Missouri Department of Conservation and ran the Plant Diagnostic Clinic at Iowa State University. He is currently based in upstate New York and operates Urban Forest Diagnostics, specializing in urban forest management, tree diagnostics and decay assessment, and has advanced diagnostic equipment to test trees for internal decay.  He has a robust schedule as a presenter and author. “Wood Decay Fungi” is well known to many arborists and his collaborative website www.treerot.com is popular.  He is a recipient of the R.W. Harris Author’s Award from the International Society of Arboriculture.

Frank Rinn
Frank Rinn invented the Resistograph ® and he holds several patents for his devices. His work has garnered many awards and he has published many articles on tree risk assessment and decay detection in wood. He holds a degree in physics and is the owner of RINNTECH, a technical expert, researcher and manufacturer.
