Help us Give Back to the Greenways at a district-wide volunteer blitz on Saturday, September 24, that coincides with National Public Lands Day. This is the nation’s largest, single-day volunteer effort dedicated to the stewardship of public lands.
Bring your family, friends, students, or coworkers to spend the day outdoors giving back to your community and the greenways by pulling invasive species, planting pollinator habitat, working on trails and cleaning up trash. Your time and effort will help ensure that the greenways and our public lands continue to be beautiful places for all to enjoy!
Tools, gloves, snacks, and water will be provided for these events. All volunteers will also receive a free one-year National Park pass.
Please wear sturdy shoes and dress for the weather.
Below is a list of project descriptions and locations.
Invasive Honeysuckle Removal
Bush honeysuckle has invaded many parks and natural areas in our urban areas. We could use your help eradicating this nasty plant and restoring habitat for our native wildlife. The birds and the butterflies will thank you for it!
We will be removing honeysuckle at Deer Creek Park located along the Deer Creek Greenway in partnership with the Open Space Council

Pollinator Garden Planting
This project is a partnership with Brightside St. Louis, City of St. Louis, Missouri Department of Conservation, Missouri Master Naturalist Great Rivers Chapter and Missouri Botanical Garden to support urban monarch conservation efforts and the creation of a Butterfly Byway along the St. Louis riverfront.
We will be planting a new pollinator garden at the Mary Meachum Visitor Center located along the Riverfront Trail of the Mississippi Greenway.

Note: Stay on East Prairie through the floodwall into gravel lot and go through the opening onto the bike trail. Take a right (south) onto the trail, the Mary Meachum building is located about 100 or so yards down the trail and will be on your left. Volunteers can park in the gravel area located just past the Mary Meachum building on the right.
Service Day at Riverlands Bird Sanctuary
A public service day will be held on Saturday, September 24th 2016 starting at 8:30am at Riverlands Bird Sanctuary, 301 Riverlands Way, West Alton, Mo.
After meeting at Riverlands volunteers may choose from several work site options on public lands at the confluence of two of our county’s great rivers, the Mississippi and Missouri. The USACE Riverlands Migratory Bird Sanctuary, Jones Confluence State Park, and the West Alton trail will be the sites of this effort to enhance our public lands.
The service day will include trash cleanups, plantings, and trail work. All necessary equipment for the cleanup will be supplied. A T-shirt or water bottle and a free National Parks pass will be given to all volunteers. There will be a free lunch for volunteers, followed by opportunities to hike on your public lands at the Confluence.
