The City of St. Louis, St. Louis Development Corporation and Great Rivers Greenway invited the region to attend an open house highlighting the progress of the North Riverfront Open Space and Redevelopment Plan. “This part of the waterfront, an extension of the revitalized front door for our region, offers a unique opportunity to create a vibrant and dynamic place to live, work and play,” said Susan Trautman, Executive Director for Great Rivers Greenway. “It’s rare that a working riverfront is free of restrictions, so we’re exploring all the ways people can connect to and enjoy the water!”

The partners have been collaborating with Bi-State Development Agency, MoDOT, Downtown STL, Laclede’s Landing Merchants Association and other stakeholders on various studies to enhance the area known as the North Riverfront. The overall goal of the Open Space and Redevelopment Plan is to promote economic revitalization of the North Riverfront by transforming vacant properties along the Mississippi River into public parks and recreation amenities, as well as enhancing private enterprise. The plan looks at both temporary uses and long-term development strategies. Other specific goals include creating a strong link between the riverfront, the Gateway Arch and all the other greenways in the River Ring; and providing active recreational and park space, as well as safe, accessible and secure access to the river and riverfront amenities.

“The North Riverfront presents a whole host of options and opportunities to better connect our City with one of the world’s greatest rivers,” said St. Louis Mayor Francis Slay.  “We want residents to imagine exactly what a revitalized riverfront looks like.  We welcome their ideas and input as we work to extend the energy of the Arch grounds transformation further north.”

The North Riverfront area is defined as the St. Louis Riverfront, with Eads Bridge on the south, the new Stan Musial/ Veterans Memorial Bridge on the north, the Mississippi River on the east, and Highway I-44 to the west. Part of this project area overlaps with the proposed riverfront stadium project. Partners have collaborated with the stadium planning team and have developed options with or without a stadium.

Great Rivers Greenway and the City of St. Louis initiated the project last summer with the selection of a consultant team, which began work in November. A Technical Advisory Committee was formed in January and has been an integral part of the project over the past several months.
