Meet Hogan

Posted on Thursday July 25, 2024

Have you ever seen people riding uni-cycles on a greenway? There’s a good chance it’s Hogan H. & his son Corvin:

“I’ve lived in St. Louis for 15 years and been an active distance uni-cyclist for about 10 of those years. Many people have seen my son and I uni-cycling on the greenways. I enjoy the dedicated spaces to ride and be safe. It allows me to explore the city and enjoy an interesting method of traveling. A typical ride for me is 5 – 10 miles out and back. My longest ride to date was the MRT loop in downtown St. Louis. When I finished, my GPS logged just over 26 miles-it was quite an accomplishment for me! I’m currently on a quest to unicycle for 1 hour in all lower 48 US states with my son Corvin. To date, we have uni-cycled in 35 states.”

Meet Mona

Posted on Thursday July 25, 2024

Mona Vespa is the President of GO! St. Louis. GO! is a local non-profit organization that encourages individuals and families in the #STL region to adopt a healthy and active lifestyle year round. They accomplish this through community collaborations, school-based programming and the creation of new and fun fitness events:

“Running is my sport, my hobby and my profession! Personally, I can’t imagine a better way to explore your own city than on foot, and the greenways are the perfect way to do that! Every time I run a greenway, I am reminded that our city is incredibly diverse in landscape and character, but is also comprised of neighborhoods and communities who are all working towards a similar goal: to make their part of our city a vibrant and welcoming home. And as a part of my job, what a joy it is to share that with the runners and walkers of our area. I’ve used greenways for several GO! St. Louis race routes, and our Summer Passport program’s entire focus is to introduce more runners to the incredible gem of these paths throughout our city. GO! St. Louis is thankful for GRG’s work and dedication to outdoor recreation in our region!”

Meet The Covid Cycle Capers

Posted on Wednesday July 24, 2024

The Covid Cycle Capers, a cycling group created by Scott Gurrerro and Rick Schweitzer at the beginning of the pandemic, have ridden every mile of the greenway network! The duo decided to form the Capers after the Magnificent Missouri ride was cancelled in April 2020 and has grown to include almost 15 regular riders.

Rick chronicles one of their regular greenway rides fondly. “Our favorite loop to ride starts at my house [in Webster] down to the Deer Creek Greenway. We ride that down to Maplewood and catch the River des Peres Greenway to Jefferson Barracks Park over the casino bridge to the Mississippi Greenway. From there, we travel back up the River des Peres Greenway over the Carondelet Connector to connect to Grant’s Trail [Gravois Greenway] which takes us all the way back to Kirkwood. We use the city streets to get back home!”

These avid cyclists average 30 miles per trip, twice a week. One member exclaims, “Can you believe our first ride was in the middle of a thunderstorm?! I’ve never biked 25 miles back so fast in my life!”

April 28 Groundbreaking Kicks Off Deer Creek Connector Project

On April 28, 2022 we joined our partners at the City of Brentwood to break ground on the Deer Creek Greenway extension! The project is extending the existing Deer Creek Greenway  from the intersection of Marshall Road and Brentwood Boulevard  north to the Rogers Parkway trail and east along Deer Creek toward the intersection of Hanley and Manchester Roads near the Maplewood MetroLink Station.

When complete, the “Deer Creek Greenway Connector” will create a paved, accessible walking and biking trail linking Brentwood’s Memorial Park (with sidewalk access to Brentwood Promenade and Brentwood Pointe shopping centers) to Lorraine Davis Park, Barnickel Park and Deer Creek Park in Webster Groves, Deer Creek Park in Maplewood and the Deer Creek Shopping Center at Big Bend Boulevard.

This project is a part of the city’s $80 million “Brentwood Bound” storm water mitigation plan for the Deer Creek flood plain that will reduce flooding, improve Manchester Rd. and enhance green space. Learn more about Brentwood Bound here.

Boy Scout Conservation along Deer Creek Greenway

Posted on Wednesday July 17, 2024

We recently caught up with James Karslake, a young conservationist who spent part of his 12th birthday fighting soil erosion along the Deer Creek Greenway. James has volunteered more than 400 hours of his time to this project, which he researched and worked with a conservation advisor to plan. This is his fourth conversation undertaking around the St. Louis region in the last year and a half. James has been conducting this work in hopes of earning a Hornaday Award, a highly prestigious award the Boy Scouts describe as an “Olympic Medal Bestowed by the Earth.” Earning the award takes a lot of hard work and James is well on his way!

Deer Creek Greenway at Brentwood Park Opening Celebration June 2023

Posted on Wednesday July 17, 2024

We joined the City of Brentwood on June 2 & 3, 2023  to cut the ribbon and celebrate the new Deer Creek Greenway extension in Brentwood and the recently completed Brentwood Park. There were food trucks, games, a bubble bus, art & the chance to explore the new greenway & park.

This project was completed as part of the larger Brentwood Bound Project. The goal of Brentwood Bound was to mitigate the repeated flooding events of Deer Creek and also improve Manchester Road in Brentwood. Read all about the new Brentwood Park here. The new destination playground will be opening in 2024!

Lorraine Davis Park: Deer Creek Greenway

Posted on Monday July 15, 2024

Located along the Deer Creek Greenway, this park honors Lorraine Davis, a North Webster resident, educator, volunteer and community leader.

About Lorraine Davis

Lorraine Davis Park is named for Lorraine Davis, a North Webster resident who taught English and Latin classes at Douglass High School. Black students from throughout all of St. Louis County attended Douglass High School in North Webster—the first and only accredited high school for Black students in St. Louis County—until 1954 when schools were desegregated.

She was a member of the O.D.T. “Our Day Together” Club which was organized in Webster Groves in the 1930s.  As part of the O.D.T. club, Davis worked to provide scholarships and encourage neighborhood beautification and other civic projects. She was also elected to the city’s new Board of Freeholders in 1953.

Lorraine Davis Park is located in North Webster at 137 E Waymire Ave, Webster Groves, 63119 (off South Brentwood Blvd.) on the Deer Creek Greenway.  North Webster was founded as a community for newly freed enslaved people in 1866, but its roots go back farther.

The first African Americans in what is now North Webster were those enslaved by John Marshall, who came from Virginia in 1832. The linear park and greenway follow the rerouted Shady Creek, once an important source of water, fish and recreation for neighbors in North Webster.

North Webster Walking Tour

The North Webster Neighborhood Coalition, Webster Groves Historical Society and the City of Webster Groves created a self-guided historic walking tour of North Webster.  A portion of the tour will take you to sites around Lorraine Davis Park. The tour is free. You can download the pdf document “A Black Community of Faith and Hope: North Webster” here.
