Mona Vespa is the President of GO! St. Louis. GO! is a local non-profit organization that encourages individuals and families in the #STL region to adopt a healthy and active lifestyle year round. They accomplish this through community collaborations, school-based programming and the creation of new and fun fitness events:
“Running is my sport, my hobby and my profession! Personally, I can’t imagine a better way to explore your own city than on foot, and the greenways are the perfect way to do that! Every time I run a greenway, I am reminded that our city is incredibly diverse in landscape and character, but is also comprised of neighborhoods and communities who are all working towards a similar goal: to make their part of our city a vibrant and welcoming home. And as a part of my job, what a joy it is to share that with the runners and walkers of our area. I’ve used greenways for several GO! St. Louis race routes, and our Summer Passport program’s entire focus is to introduce more runners to the incredible gem of these paths throughout our city. GO! St. Louis is thankful for GRG’s work and dedication to outdoor recreation in our region!”

This work takes different forms depending upon the location and the project. One example is the 34-acre native wildflower meadow along the Dardenne Greenway: BaratHaven in St. Charles County. Formerly a sod farm, it’s now a thriving prairie and natural floodplain for Dardenne Creek that offers valuable resources to pollinators, birds and wildlife. It’s also a picturesque landscape enjoyed by the people who walk, ride or run along the greenway.
2017- Site Preparation and Planting
In 2017, we took the first steps to transform the former sod farm into a field of native flowers and grasses to benefit the local ecology. The site was cleared of sod and weeds and seeded with native warm-season grasses. Crews maintained the site to promote root growth for the native plants while preventing annual weeds from setting seeds.
2018-2019-Native wildflower seeding & maintenance
During the winter of 2018, the entire site was seeded with a mix of native wildflowers. Our team monitored the area throughout the growing season to make sure the native plants were taking root and invasive species and annual weeds were not establishing themselves across the site.
2020-Prescribed Burn
To help keep the prairie healthy and beautiful, we completed another important step in its continued growth and establishment – a prescribed burn. In February 2020, conditions were just right for the use of a controlled fire to remove dead vegetation and eliminate undesirable invasive plants. Thanks to their deep root systems, the native plants not only survived the burn but also thrived thanks to the nutrients released into the ground by the burning process. They are also getting more sunlight than before since the covering vegetation was burned off during the fire. We’ll continue to monitor and maintain the site to help keep the native plant communities in balance and invasive weeds out.

Wind down your day with a 30 minute walk on a greenway followed by 30 minutes of all-level outdoor yoga with YogaBuzz. Beginners welcome! Bring a friend, water, comfortable walking shoes, and a yoga mat or towel. FREE, but pre-registration is required. More info and registration in each link below.

BLUEBIRD MEADOW PARK
Bluebird Meadow Park, Henning Road, Dardenne Prairie, MO, USA
Help Great Rivers Greenway hack some honeysuckle and callery pear at Bluebird Meadow Park! Volunteers will work along the Dardenne Greenway near Bluebird Meadow.
Volunteers will help remove invasive bush honeysuckle and callery pear by cutting the plant with handsaws or loppers, dragging, and piling debris to be chipped. This volunteer day will help ongoing prairie restoration efforts by removing these invasive species to make room for native prairie species.
No experience is necessary for this activity, but it does involve physical labor and walking in the woods over varying terrain. Long pants and closed toed shoes are required for participation. Make sure to dress for the weather in clothes you do not mind getting dirty. Work gloves, tools, and other equipment will be provided.
Restroom will be available on site. Great Rivers Greenway will provide packaged snacks and water. Volunteers are encouraged to bring their own water bottle to help us reduce plastic waste.
Minimum age for participation is 12.

From I-64, take exit 9 and go north on Highway K. Take your first left onto Technology Drive. Take your first right onto Weldon Spring Road. Continue for 1.0 mile on Weldon Spring Road. Turn left to continue on Weldon Spring Road where it intersects with Brook Lane. Continue on Weldon Spring Road for 0.4 mile. Turn right onto Henning Road. Continue on Henning Road for 0.5 mile. Turn left on BaratHaven Boulevard then take an immediate right into the trailhead parking lot.
Join the St. Louis Audubon Society for a guided beginner bird walk along the greenway. Meet others who share your interest in nature, birds, and wildlife! All experience levels welcome. Bring binoculars, they will have a few extra pairs to borrow if you don’t have your own.
The bird walk is free, but all participants must register in advance at the St. Louis Audubon Society website.
