Hodiamont Greenway Plan

The Hodiamont Tracks were once the route of a streetcar line and in later years a bus route.  In 2018, Great Rivers Greenway began working with area residents to talk about turning the 3.5-mile corridor into a greenway. The tracks start on Enright Avenue, one block west of Vandeventer in the Grand Center Arts District and continue west 3.5 miles connecting the Vandeventer, Lewis Place, Fountain Park, Academy/Sherman Park, Visitation Park, West End and Covenant Blu-Grand Center neighborhoods in the City of St. Louis to Gwen Giles Park at the city limit.  In addition to connecting to existing and future greenways, it will link numerous schools, parks, houses of worship and neighborhoods.

Hodiamont Greenway: St. Vincent Greenway to Belt Avenue

Project Overview

This segment of the Hodiamont Greenway will be built on the former Hodiamont Tracks between the St. Vincent Greenway in the West End neighborhood and Belt Avenue. It will be a template for future segments to follow. There will be new amenities in Ruth Porter Park that will be selected based on community feedback. There will also be safety enhancements where the greenway crosses Belt Avenue. These enhancements will serve as a guide for the other 30+ roadway crossing along this nearly 3.5-mile future greenway.

Project Location

The greenway will be built along the former streetcar line known as the Hodiamont Tracks between Belt Avenue and the existing St. Vincent Greenway in Ruth Porter Mall Park. Cabanne Ave runs parallel to the Hodiamont Tracks to the south of this location, and Vernon Avenue to the north.

Project Partners

City of St. Louis
Great Rivers Greenway

Current Status

The next phase of design is slated to begin in early 2025.

Hodiamont Greenway: Gwen Giles Park

Project Overview

The first phase of the Hodiamont Greenway will be built in Gwen Giles Park located in the West End neighborhood at the intersection of the Hodiamont Tracks and Hodiamont Avenue near North Skinker in the City of St. Louis. This segment will connect to a new on-street cycle track (two-way roadway for bikes, separated from traffic) on Hodiamont Avenue being built by the City of St. Louis. In addition to the paved greenway trail along the old streetcar route, the project will include an expanded paved loop path around the park, as well as a trailhead and other potential amenities that will be driven by community feedback.

Project Location

Gwen Giles Park is located in the West End neighborhood neighborhood in the City of St. Louis.

Western Greenway: Hamilton Creek Stream Bank Restoration Project

Project Overview

Hamilton Creek in the City of Wildwood runs parallel to a section of the Western Greenway between Grand Avenue and Old State Road. A section of the stream bank is experiencing erosion that threatens to impact not only the paved greenway, but also water quality and habitat in this area. Great Rivers Greenway and the City of Wildwood are partnering to identify the cause of the erosion and develop solutions to prevent it in the future.

Project Location

The project area is focused on approximately 300 linear feet of Hamilton Creek stream bank next to the greenway between Grand Avenue and Old State Road and Highway 109 in Wildwood.

Project Partners

City of Wildwood, Missouri
Great Rivers Greenway

Current Status

The goal of this project is to proactively prevent future damage to the existing greenway and improve habitat by using nature-based and engineered solutions on the stream bank. This could include reinforcement of the “toe” of the creek bank with rocks and willow staking. Crews have conducted geotechnical drilling to help identify the next steps. Final design is expected to be complete in late summer 2025.
