STANDARDS FOR TREE STAKING

Tree staking may be needed to help support trees during the establishment phase, before a tree is firmly rooted.

Tree staking is often left on the tree long after it is useful and has begun to permanently harm the tree. Also, there is some concern that tree staking actually prevents the tree from establishing a strong root and trunk system. Tree staking should only be done where necessary.

RECOMMENDED USE

Trees under 2.5 inch caliper.

  • Avoid staking if possible, these trees do not typically require staking.
  • Smaller trees may require staking if they are on significant slopes.
  • Smaller trees that are fully leafed out at the time of planting may require staking.

Larger trees

  • Consider tree staking as part of the design.
  • Larger trees may not require staking if not in leaf (fall/ winter planting).
  • Tree staking – To be removed within ONE year after substantial completion or as needed.

STANDARD TREE STAKING

BEST USE AREAS:

  • Lower priority areas and areas away from primary trail (>10’ away.)

PROS:

  • Standard installation practice.

CONS:

  • Easily forgotten and often not removed before tree has been critically damaged.

INSTALLATION:

  • 3 wooden stakes, min. Install approximately 2” away from the edge of the root ball. Nylon tree straps at tree. Refer to ISA tree staking guidelines for additional resources.

STANDARD TREE GUYING

BEST USE AREAS:

  • Lower priority areas and areas away from primary trail (>10’ away.)

PROS:

  • Standard installation practice.

CONS:

  • Tripping hazard. Easily forgotten and often not removed before tree has been critically damaged.

INSTALLATION:

  • Metal guy wires with turnbuckles for tightening. Nylon tree straps at tree. 3 wooden stakes, min. Deer protection mesh as needed.

ROOT BALL ANCHOR

BEST USE AREAS:

  • Areas of high traffic, where there is concern for tripping especially on trees immediately adjacent to trail.

PROS:

  • Not visible, no tripping hazard, no removal required.

CONS:

  • Not easily adjustable, permanent.
